Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of common viruses that cause infections in both men and women. Most HPV infections clear up on their own, however, persistent infection by certain HPV types can cause cervical cancer in women over time. The link between HPV and cervical cancer makes it highly preventable through HPV vaccination and regular HPV screening.

2. Who is suitable to take the HPV Test?
It is currently recommended that women aged 30 and above who have previously engaged in sexual intercourse should go for regular cervical cancer screening. Screening frequency is once every 5 years.

3. I have taken my HPV vaccination, do I still need to go for regular cervical cancer screening?
While the HPV vaccine protects against some types of HPV, it doesn't protect against them all—and no vaccine is 100% effective. The HPV vaccine also would not have treated any existing HPV infections. This  means that regular cervical screening remains important.

4. How easy is it to collect my own sample?
Sample collection should be quick, easy and done in the comfort of your home. You can refer to this link here for an instructional video on how to collect your sample.

5. When is the best time to do the self-sampling?
It’s best to perform the self-sampling when you are not on your period and in a private, comfortable setting. The self-sampling can be done at any time within the entire day.

6. When should I not use the test?

Please wait at least 48 hours after intercourse/sexual activity or using vaginal creams, gels or tablets before collecting your sample. In addition, this testing is not suitable for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant and have concerns about HPV, please talk to your doctor.

7. What happens if I am HPV positive?
With HPV extended genotyping, doctors are better equipped to know whether their patients have a type of HPV that puts them at high risk of cervical cancer and can better discuss next steps in their health care. Those steps might include follow-up monitoring, further testing, or treatment of abnormal or precancerous cells.
