Japan Winter Skincare Guide: What to Pack From Singapore

The key to Japan winter skincare when you're travelling from Singapore: switch to a richer moisturiser, keep wearing SPF daily, and pack a lip and hand product. The cold, dry air and indoor heating pull moisture from your skin much faster than Singapore's humidity, so your routine needs more hydration and protection.

If you're one of the many Singaporeans heading to Japan this December, you already know the drill. Pack the puffer jacket, the thermals and the comfy walking shoes. But there's one thing most of us forget to plan for: our skin.

Going from 30 degrees and sticky humidity to near-freezing temperatures is a big shock for your skin. The skincare that works perfectly at home might leave you feeling tight, dry and flaky by day two in Tokyo. Here's how to adjust your routine so you land looking fresh and stay that way the whole trip.

Why your skin reacts so differently in Japan

In Singapore, the air is full of moisture, so our skin rarely has to work extra hard to stay hydrated. Most of us reach for lightweight gels and water-based formulas for exactly that reason.

Japanese winters are the opposite. The air outside is cold and dry, and then you step indoors to heaters that dry it out even more. Your skin loses moisture faster than it's used to, which is why so many people come home with red cheeks, chapped lips and that tight feeling after cleansing.

The good news is you don't need to pack your whole bathroom. A few small changes make a big difference.

What to pack from Singapore | Japan to Singapore

Start on the plane

Your skin starts drying out before you even land. Cabin humidity can drop below 10%, compared with around 30 to 50% in a typical room, and the flight from Singapore to Tokyo is around seven hours.

Keep it simple on board:

  • Start with clean skin and a good layer of moisture before you board.

  • Drink plenty of water and go easy on the coffee and wine.

  • Reapply moisture halfway through the flight.

  • Keep a lip product within reach.

You don't need a ten-step routine in your seat. A couple of products you actually enjoy using will do the job.

Your Japan winter routine

Morning

  1. A gentle cleanse, or just a splash of water if your skin feels dry

  2. A richer moisturiser than you'd use at home

  3. Sunscreen, every single day

Yes, even in winter. UV is still there on cloudy days, and if you're heading to the snow in places like Hokkaido, snow reflects sunlight onto your face. Use about 2 finger lengths for your face and neck, apply it at least 15 minutes before heading out, and reapply every two hours if you're outdoors.

Evening

  1. Cleanse gently to remove sunscreen and the day's city grime.

  2. Layer on hydration.

  3. Finish with a nourishing moisturiser to lock it all in overnight.

During the day

You'll be walking a lot, in and out of trains, shops and cafes. Keep a lip product and a small hand cream in your bag. Hands and lips usually crack first in the cold.

Heading to Hokkaido or a ski trip?

Hokkaido is a fast-growing winter favourite for Singaporeans. Places like Sapporo and Niseko are much colder than Tokyo. Your skin needs a little extra care in the snow.

  • Sunscreen matters more, not less. According to the World Health Organisation, snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, and UV levels rise by around 10% for every 1,000 metres of altitude. Apply before you hit the slopes and reapply every two hours.

  • Cover your lips and cheeks. Wind on the slopes dries out exposed skin fast. A balm on your lips and a scarf or neck warmer over your cheeks helps a lot.

  • Moisturise straight after the onsen. Hot springs are a highlight of any Hokkaido trip, but long soaks in hot water can leave skin feeling dry and tight. Pat dry and moisturise within a few minutes.

  • Don't forget your neck and ears. They're often left out of your routine but get just as much wind and sun.

Pack smarter, not heavier

Winter clothes take up a lot of room, so your skincare needs to earn its spot in the suitcase. Look for products that do more than one job.

Our Daily Sunscreen is our go-to here. One pump covers your SPF50 PA+++ sunscreen, hydrating mist, moisturiser and primer, so that's fewer bottles to pack. If your skin runs dry in the cold, add a moisturiser underneath. It's also easy to fit into your liquids bag for the flight.

A note from our formulation team: Our Daily Sunscreen is made in small batches in Singapore by a team with 30 years of formulation experience.

What we're packing for Japan

Here's what's going in our carry-on for a winter trip to Japan. Every bottle is under 100ml, so it all fits in your carry-on liquids bag.

1. Beaubit Daily Sunscreen SPF50 PA+++

The one product we'd never travel without. One pump covers your SPF50 PA+++ sunscreen, hydrating mist, moisturiser and primer, so it does the job of four bottles for normal, combination and oily skin. Drier skin may still want a moisturiser underneath, especially in Japan's winter air. It also hydrates with hyaluronic acid and ceramide, with no white cast. The 35ml bottle is carry-on friendly and comes in two scents: Original, with a light rose scent, and Rose, the same formula with more rose. For a short trip, the 5ml mini in Rose is enough for about four mornings and fits in a coat pocket.

2. HEVEBLUE Salmon Caring Centella Special Travel Kit Bag

A complete four-step routine in mini sizes: a 30ml bubble cleanser, 25ml toner, 13ml ampoule and 20ml cream, all in a transparent pouch. Made with centella and salmon PDRN, it's designed to soothe redness, moisturise and support the skin barrier, which is just what skin stressed by cold air and heating needs. Use the full routine morning and night while you're away.

3. glow mini breathable blemish balm

A lightweight blemish balm with a skincare-like texture and a natural, hydrated glow, which is exactly what dry winter skin needs instead of a heavy foundation. At 5 ml, it's travel-ready. Apply it after your sunscreen. It comes in #one, plus #white and #brown so that you can mix your perfect shade.

4. NOT KIND Fiber Freak Lip & Eye Makeup Remover Pad

After a long day of sightseeing, these make taking your makeup off quick and easy. Infused with aloe vera and made from ultra-fine fibres, they're gentle on delicate lip and eye areas with no harsh rubbing. With 60 pads in a packet, one pack covers the whole trip.

5. Saltrain Travel Kit (Toothpaste & Toothbrush)

A compact 30g Korean toothpaste, a toothbrush and a pouch, all in one. It's perfect for the plane, a ryokan stay or freshening up between day trips. Choose from flavours like Gray Salt, Rose Citron and Strong Mint.

6. Beaubit Daily Pouch Oat

The soft, quilted pouch that keeps all of the above together. In cream and white with a heart pointelle lining, it's 15 x 11 x 13cm, roomy enough for your travel essentials while still fitting in your handbag or day pack.

A few last tips

  • Don't try new products on the trip. Test anything new at home first, on a small area of skin.

  • Skip the long hot showers. As tempting as they are when it's freezing, hot water strips your skin's moisture.

  • Shop the Japanese drugstores, but pack your basics. It's half the fun of the trip, but you don't want to be hunting for sunscreen on day one.

  • Come home gently. Your skin will need a few days to settle back into Singapore humidity, so go back to your lighter routine slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need sunscreen in Japan in winter?

Yes. UV rays still reach your skin on cold, cloudy days, and the World Health Organisation notes that snow can reflect up to 80% of them. Wear SPF every morning and reapply every two hours if you're outdoors or skiing.

Why does my skin get so dry in Japan in winter?

The outdoor air is cold and holds very little moisture, and indoor heating dries it out even more. Coming from Singapore's humidity, your skin isn't used to losing water this quickly so that it can feel tight, flaky or red within a day or two.

What skincare should I pack for Japan in winter?

Pack a gentle cleanser, a richer moisturiser, a daily sunscreen, a lip product and a hand cream. Multi-use products save space in your suitcase and your liquids bag.

How do I look after my skin on a long flight?

Board with clean, well-moisturised skin, drink plenty of water, and reapply moisturiser halfway through the flight. Keep a lip product within reach. A simple routine works better than a long one in your seat.

What should I use on my skin after an onsen?

Pat your skin dry and apply moisturiser within a few minutes of getting out. Long soaks in hot water can leave skin feeling dry and tight, so locking in hydration straight away helps.

Can I bring skincare in my carry-on from Singapore?

Yes. At Changi Airport, each liquid, gel or cream must be 100ml or less, and they must all fit in one clear, resealable bag of up to 1 litre, with one bag per passenger. Rules vary between airports, so check before your return flight too.
